I don't pretend to even be a novice programmer, but I am picking up a lot of Perl in my current job. I've been learning how to use Perl packages and so forth to take short cuts to output things like HTML and other various ways of formatting text. Everything you just said makes so much sense. The point of any technology is to make tasks simple, in order to focus your energy on an other task that deserves your attention. I'm so thankful every time I find a package that allows me to write a perl script to interface with an SQL database, or output to HTML so that I don't have to remember how to address things in more than one method. That is what a good tool does, and a DAL is just another tool that helps a programmer get the job done.

Woe to those who make their programing about using a tool, instead of using the right tool to program what they need, for they shall experience much weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Preach it brother.

I work all day in a tech support office, so this is something we have to remind ourselves every day because it is the hardest thing to remember. Yes, all of us at one time or another were just as smart or educated as the people we have to help. And it is not their fault that they are still the student.

Thanks for the post, I'm glad I'm not the only person who struggles with this.
